Expert Audiologist, Annemarie Narraway When hearing aids don't work. We all want the easiest solution to a problem. The quickest way. Like everything, hearing aids don't work unless you work them. It is a collaboration between you, your brain and the external device. I think it a privilege to be able to come along-side people and provide a device that is able to supplement where the body is un-able to produce the necessary stimulus on its own. Hearing aids are an aid to hearing and listening-like a pair of crutches is to walking if you have a broken foot. Using the same metaphor, when one initially starts with crutches, one is very uncoordinated but after a while, with practice, one is able to get better and quicker at it. Research shows that wearing your hearing aids and a minimum of 6 hours a day enables the brain to get used to the "new normal", so it can acclimatise to it and then focus on what is important. As it will always focus on what is different. If after two weeks of wearing the aids for a minimum of six hours a day, one is still not comfortable with them, an adjustment is indicated. If continued wearing and adjustments are not bringing joy, other options such as a cochlear implant (Cl)may be indicated/ investigated. Again, a Cl, is a collaboration between the brain and the wearer, with many hours of training required. If you have hearing aids, please wear them, especially in the lead up to the festive season as, being 'intune' with them will enable much easier communication with all, including loved ones. Until next time...
