Whole eye transplant - update It is now 18 months since the world's first ever eye transplant was performed on a 46yo man in Arkansas. Amazingly the eye has not been rejected, and special electrophysiology testing shows the retina is showing response to light. The 21-hour eye and face replacement surgery was performed following an injury with high voltage power lines damaged the man's left eye and face. The operation was performed in 2023 at NYU Langone Health in the US, by a team of more than 140 surgeons led by Dr Eduardo Rodriguez. Whilst the recipient has not regained any vision in the transplanted eye, the fact the eye has not been rejected is a major achievement. The surgical team are now focused on what can be done to restore vision. The end goal is to be able to perform eye transplantation in the future to treat vision loss.
